Temping Work and Office Politics How To Impress the Boss?

October 2nd, 2009

If you are working in any kind of secretarial position and you are party to hearing all kinds of rumours, office gossip and even witnessing a bit of office politics going on, then the best way to impress your boss is to stay out of office politics!

Office politics really is a thorny issue. At its best it wastes time, since people can end up playing office politics instead of doing their jobs. At its worst it ends up with people feeling alienated, isolated and like they are not part of the team: in other words it is almost a subtle, or not so subtle form of bullying or harassment.

Staying aloof from office politics may not win you any prizes for collaborating with your colleagues, but on the other hand, your manager, if she is of any worth, will recognise the fact that you do not get embroiled in the childish games in the office and will respect that and as a result, respect you as well.

Some people think that it does not matter if they are doing a temping job, since they are not permanent, but it could well be that management would like to appoint a permanent member of staff and if they see that you are good and that you do not play games at work, then they are more likely to want to appoint you as a permanent member of the team. Secretarial jobs can be hard for employers to fill, so they are looking for people with the right skills, qualities and attributes to make a good contribution to the team, so you can fulfill their needs by simply being good at your job, but ignoring all the office politics and leaving childish games where they belong: in the playground. This will impress your boss and could well lead to a permanent, not just a temping role.

Office Temping Jobs 10 of the Best Paid Temping Job Areas

September 26th, 2009

Office temping jobs are very varied, which means that many are low paid, many are reasonably well paid and some are pretty well paid, particularly for temping jobs. But what are these jobs?

Well basically the more skilled you are, then the more chances you have of getting a well paid temping job. So if you are a Business manager, a Systems Analyst or some kind of IT specialist, then you can expect to earn some pretty good money for being a temp. Most IT jobs pay well, so long as you have the necessary skills and experience.

HR jobs, such as specialist advisers, occupational health advisers or recruitment consultants also offer good rates of remuneration. Then there are jobs in finance, which may not pay the mega bucks that they did a few years ago, but are still well paid. Or if you are a legal secretary or medical secretary, then there is also good money to be made.

Towards the bottom of the well paid temping jobs list there are some rather less savoury jobs. If you are willing to deal with irate members of the public then you may well consider taking a specific job in a complaints section of customer care, dealing with people who are less than satisfied with the service that they have received. But beware, this is not for the faint hearted and you will need to be quite strong to deal with some of the people that you will encounter.

Finally, the 10th best paid temping jobs can be in tele-sales, but usually this depends on how good you are: if you are good then it will be easy money: if you are not so good then you will struggle, but there are decent salaries to be made.

So not all temping jobs are poorly paid and you could be looking at a salary in excess of £45 k a year if you have the right skills and the right job comes up!

Temping Jobs Is This Better Than a Full Time Jobs For Temps

September 23rd, 2009

Often people get slightly confused about temping jobs and how they work in practice. Many people think that a temping job is ok, but you generally have to work when you are told to be there, you are not allowed much time off for medical or dental appointments and you don’t get to work on flexitime.

Then there are other people who think that temps have all the luck and they get to see different types of companies, they have no commitment, they can leave when they please and walk into another job the next day. So which is right? Well the answer is that both are to some extent right. People who are permanent employees may get more perks in terms of time off, flexible working etc, but if they lose their job then this can place them in a really difficult position, particularly if they have a mortgage, whereas temps can find work quite easily and are slightly more used to working for different organisations, so if their contract is stopped, to some extent, it is not the end of the world.

The bottom line is that whatever kind of office job suits you then you should do that job, whether it is on a temporary basis or a permanent basis. Some people have the ideal temperament to be suited to temping jobs, other people hate it, so it really is about what suits you as an individual and if you do start temping, then you may find that it will take a few different temporary jobs, before you can really tell whether you like it or not. Some people love temping, others find it simply a way of paying their bills, but either way it can make life a lot easier for people and ensure that they keep their hand in when it comes to being employed.

Temping Job Types

May 4th, 2009

Do not assume that just because you are a temp, that you will be working in an office answering the phone and making the boss’s tea. No, there are literally hundreds of different types of temping jobs available. The word ‘temp’ means temporary, i.e. you will not be awarded a permanent contract, but that doesn’t mean that the work is actually menial. You can do lots of things from working in advertising, media, TV, radio, to being a specialised temp, for example, working as a Quantity Surveyor or a manager. You could even work as a surveyor, or a bricklayer, or a carer, cleaner or you could even work in accounts.

In fact the number of temporary jobs is constantly rising, since many employers are fearful that the recession means that they cannot take people on with a  permanent contract, so getting a temp in means that the job will be filled, but without the cost implications of a permanent contract.

In the ‘good old days’ temping jobs were very much seen as a second class job, but those days have gone now and many professionals like to work on a temporary basis, because they enjoy the variety, meeting new people and learning about how work is done in different ways, according to the procedures of different companies.

People often use temping jobs to meet their needs, whether they are a student, can’t decide on what to do or they are a writer or an actor who wants to make ends meet until their big break comes up.

If you don’t believe that the world of temping is as diverse and exciting as portrayed here, then just talk to any recruitment agency, who will be able to assure you and help you realise that there is a world out there waiting for you and what is available really is fantastically diverse!

Temping Jobs Is It Best to Search Online Or Use A Recruitment Agency?

April 27th, 2009

Many people think that it is far better to search for temping jobs online by yourself, rather than sign up to an agency.  But the reality is that a recruitment agency may help you to save time, so that it doesn’t take that long to find a job.  It is also possible to find a job in another area of the country.

So if you are based in Aberdeen, but you fancy spending the summer temping in Kent, then all you have to do is sign up with a recruitment agency that covers Kent, so that you are offered the maximum number of positions – whereas if you are based in Aberdeen, but you want to do all the online research yourself, you can certainly do it, but it may take a little more time and you may not get the best choice of the top positions available.

If you do want to look in another area, or find a recruitment agency in say Kent, Scotland, Wales etc then a simple search using the area you want plus recruitment agency will show up lots of different agencies many of which may be specialist and many of which may offer all kinds of vacancies.

If you prefer signing up with a high street branch, then you can easily find details on the internet and then contact an agency directly, but still send in your CV and details via email.  It is all very simple.

Thus it is really easy to secure work in other parts of the country and you don’t have to travel miles to find a temping job hundreds of miles from home. So take heart, whatever kind of job you are looking for, you will find that it is easy to find it online whether with a recruitment agency or by your own efforts.
