Temping Jobs Is It Best to Search Online Or Use A Recruitment Agency?

April 27th, 2009

Many people think that it is far better to search for temping jobs online by yourself, rather than sign up to an agency.  But the reality is that a recruitment agency may help you to save time, so that it doesn’t take that long to find a job.  It is also possible to find a job in another area of the country.

So if you are based in Aberdeen, but you fancy spending the summer temping in Kent, then all you have to do is sign up with a recruitment agency that covers Kent, so that you are offered the maximum number of positions – whereas if you are based in Aberdeen, but you want to do all the online research yourself, you can certainly do it, but it may take a little more time and you may not get the best choice of the top positions available.

If you do want to look in another area, or find a recruitment agency in say Kent, Scotland, Wales etc then a simple search using the area you want plus recruitment agency will show up lots of different agencies many of which may be specialist and many of which may offer all kinds of vacancies.

If you prefer signing up with a high street branch, then you can easily find details on the internet and then contact an agency directly, but still send in your CV and details via email.  It is all very simple.

Thus it is really easy to secure work in other parts of the country and you don’t have to travel miles to find a temping job hundreds of miles from home. So take heart, whatever kind of job you are looking for, you will find that it is easy to find it online whether with a recruitment agency or by your own efforts.

Would You Give Up Your Permanent Job To Go Temping?

December 10th, 2008

The thought of giving up your permanent position, in order to go temping is one that may seem a little silly. After all, you have a permanent contract, stability and the ability to progress through a company or organisation until you reach where your career takes you. That is sensible and stable isn’t it?

Well sometimes life isn’t about being stable and sensible, but life is about pushing boundaries and just expanding your horizons a little, so temping can actually offer you a good career path, even though you don’t have a permanent position.

Temping usually offers good money, so if you are a receptionist on a permanent contract, then you would potentially earn more working as a temp, so it can make financial sense as well.

Temping can also allow you space to try out different types of companies and organisation, from the public sector to not for profit companies and also the private sector. If you are interested in seeing whether the grass is actually greener on the other side, then this is an ideal way to do it and if you are good and prove your worth, then you could be invited to apply for a permanent position.

So all in all, temping is definitely worth considering and a chat with any recruitment agency will bear this out. And if those people who want stability, no change and the same work day in and day out, pour scorn on your ambitions or say that you have given up a perfectly good job with little hope of job security, there is no need to respond. They are probably just jealous that you have the guts to try out something new, adventurous and to go beyond what is comfortable in the hope of finding a more fulfilling career.

Temping: A Popular Way to Work

December 7th, 2008

How would you like a job that offers complete flexibility and the ability to change to something else if you find that you don’t really enjoy where you are working? Would you like a way of working that means you are always meeting new people, learning new skills, seeing different aspects of working life and generally, getting very well paid for doing so? Well if you would, then seriously consider temping and if you wouldn’t, well perhaps you are missing out on some great work experiences and you should think about it anyway!

Temping is now a hugely popular way of working. The number of temps has effectively tripled over the last 10 years. That’s right, in just 10 years there are now 3 times as many temps as there were in 1998. So it is a huge growth field and with so many people opting to be temps, there are a great many opportunities to try different types of temping jobs, no matter what kind of skills, qualifications or experience that you have.

Recruitment agencies are now abundant, with online recruitment agencies and High Street agencies available. The vacancies they carry may vary, but the rates of pay are quite attractive and mean that you are paid over the odds for the work you do, which in itself is tempting. Many agencies have very diverse positions available, which gives you the chance to try out potentially new and often quite rewarding careers.

So instead of thinking of temping as being a stop gap in terms of employment, you should regard it as being very valuable work experience and in itself, a process that can only open new doors for you. For specific advice, check out a recruitment agency and then just see where your career will take you, with some interesting work en route!

Temping Positions Should Enhance Your Skills

December 5th, 2008

Temping used to be looked at as s top gap type job. You were waiting to go to University or working your way through college, well you would temp. But these days the whole philosophy about temping has changed significantly and many people choose temping as a longer term prospect. But instead of treating temping as a stop gap, they actually use temping to enhance their skills.

With each position taken, a different set of skills are picked up so that after a few years temping the person actually has a very robust CV, which has been greatly enhanced by the variety of places that they have worked and the kinds of experiences that they have had.

Many recruitment agency advisers are also of the opinion that treating temping as a potentially long-term career is actually of benefit. Many employers, particularly in some of the ‘youth driven’ employment fields especially PR, some aspects of the media etc do not want to recruit someone who has worked for the same firm for 10 years, doing the same job, working with the same people and is potentially terrified of change. No, they would prefer to employ someone who has worked in different settings, with different people, who positively embraces change and new working practices and is at home in a new environment.

But for you to take advantage of the boost that temping can give your career, it is important that you expand your comfort zone, on a regular basis and take on new skills, new responsibilities and learn new working practices. That way you demonstrate that you are very much someone who is far from stagnant but keen to move onwards and upwards and embrace a rewarding career. So keep pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone and enjoy the difference it makes to your CV!

Lifelong Temp

November 28th, 2008

Some people try being a temp and then move into a permanent position or they go back to university or have children and take a career break, but others actually never stop temping and wouldn’t have it any other way!

Temping is a great way of meeting new colleagues. You no longer have to worry about what the gossips are saying in the office or whether you ‘fit in’ with the culture and the environment. If you feel you don’t, you just move on and what is more, you know that it isn’t permanent, so you tend to find it easier just to blend in, safe in the knowledge that in a couple of months you will be elsewhere.

Some people find it hard to think about temping for the whole of a career. They think that staying in the same office for a long time, helps them to make friends with colleagues and form trusting friendships. But the reality is that if you ‘click’ with someone and they are going to be your friend, then they will be so, even after you leave, so don’t stay stuck in the same job because of the people there. Who knows in your next position, the staff team could even be better?

Many recruitment agencies are now reporting that a lot of temps are choosing the flexibility of temping over being tied to a permanent position and since these days, no job is guaranteed for life, temping is no longer a career filler, but can be considered a serious career. It shows that you have drive, flexibility, can get on well with people and can adapt to different situations, obviously very quickly: these are skills that employers welcome and any recruitment agency will confirm this. So instead of thinking just like everyone else, why not think a little bit laterally about your career and how temping may be right up your street!
